Greetings from Costa Rica!
The Dry Season, or Summer, is underway here at AmaTierra.
Birdwatchers are excitedly recording over 50 species of birds. Lemur-like
creatures called "Martillas" can be heard in the trees at night, and
the wind-up cicadas are back, heralding the sunset at exactly 5:40 pm. Costa
Rica brings out the wondering child in us all, and stress seems to fall away
from visitor's shoulders after the first lazy hour in a hammock. Check out our new, very affordable vacation packages like the Day Tripper and Happy Healthy Holiday.

The Very Beginnings

Long poles: These trees were cut during the "menguante"
or the dark phase of the moon, which is important here in hardwood
country, to ensure the quality of the woods. The poles are notched
and fitted into place.

Shadecloth, chicken wire and plastic make up the roof. The Northern
wall will have bamboo to protect against the winds. The rest will
have screening to keep the critters out. By June we will have plenty
of organic produce!

Happenings
The San Pablo Festival was big fun this year. Jill sang
Karaoke in English, the bulls were ferocious, flinging their riders onto the
dust, the "tope" Spanish Andalusian dancing horses were a marvel.
The festival in Puriscal, a much larger one, is next. (Feb
23-March 4th) Costa Ricans LOVE to party, and summer is the time.
Come on DOWN!!!!

RainForest Medicinal Herbs
"Gotas Amargas" or "Bitter Drops" (Chenopodium botrys), a
cousin to Epazote, wormseed, is used for intestinal parasites, and especially
for food poisoning. In North America,
"goosefoot" as it is known, was used by the Cherokee and other tribes for head
colds, the root for fevers. It has been studied for its anti-microbial benefits.
