4. Summer Herbs for Cooling
Hola, Amigos!
Here in Central America, the rains have begun, and we are grateful after such a long hot dry season. Just like most of you in North America and Europe, we are planting, new birds are nesting and Growth is in the air! If you have not been to Costa Rica in the Green Season, you are in for a real treat! No crowds, lower prices and intense tropical green await you here.
How rainy is it? AmaTierra sits at around 1800 feet, where the sun shines all morning, cooling clouds come in the afternoon and gentle rain starts at around 3-4pm, just in time for siesta. So there is plenty of time for morning hikes after yoga and breakfast, or half-day excursions to nearby parks & waterfalls. Airfares are going DOWN, so shop around.
Come for the couples retreat in August to renew your relationship, or for pampering in July at our illuminating spa living workshop, or simply take advantage of our special green season offers.
See you soon!!!

Cool off this summer with refreshing herbs and foods
Vegetables and fruits contain WATER, and when it's
hot outside, we need hydration. Increase your raw foods by having cucumbers, celery, carrots, raw beets, salad greens, berries, peaches and melon available in your fridge all summer.
Iced herbal teas can be made in the sun! Try hibiscus and mint teas with a hint of lemon for a refreshing drink. In fact, you can use the mints in many ways to stay cool...if you have a plant in a pot or in your yard, chew the leaves now and then, use to garnish salads, sorbet or stir-fried dishes. Use a cool mint tea to soothe a sunburn (with black tea in a bath you will turn to tan quickly), or put a sprig in your shoes to keep your feet cool. And remember, the mint family contains more than just peppermint and spearmint-- basil, lemon balm, rosemary, lavender, sage, monarda, oregano and motherwort are all varieties of mint.
Pack some watermelon for your hike, or after exercising outdoors and EAT THE SEEDS. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these seeds are used for "summer heat" or heat stroke. Peach twigs and flowers made into a tea are also very cooling.
Do you know why people who live in tropical climates eat spicy food? Because it makes you perspire, and that cools you off. Mint is known as a "cooling diaphoretic" herb for this reason, as well.
Have a COOL summer!-- Jill
