Costa Rica News: Update on CAFTA
Pathways to Wellness in Costa Rica October 2007

The CAFTA Decision... "Si"

The people of Costa Rica involved in the political process of this peaceful countryThe people of Costa Rica decided, in a very close popular vote,to adopt   the Central American Free Trade Agreement, known here as TLC-Tratado de Libre Comercio-. Proponents of TLC were able to afford persuasive ads on TV and radio, and convinced the majority of Costa Ricans that TLC is good for Costa Rica.

Time will tell if this is true.

We are encouraged to learn that Costa Rica is the only country to put restrictions on CAFTA which protect some sectors of the local economy.  Some agricultural goods coming into the country will not be tax-free, thus protecting local farmers. Also, national laws supercede the treaty, making it impossible, for example, for gun-making factories to do business here in this peace-loving country. We are also hopeful that the large number of North American residents who care very much about maintaining high environmental standards will be influential in curbing rampant industrial growth.

Costa Rica's National Parks make up 22% of the country, and the people and government here understand how precious the ecosystem is. If the tourism board continues to promote sustainable tourism, offering special status to hotels like AmaTierra who inform their guests and work with the community in environmental awareness, the "green revolution" will thrive in Costa Rica despite CAFTA.
