AmaTierra is a life-enhancing guest facility nestled on 8 acres in the Costa Rican mountains 1 hour west of the capital city of San Jose and 1 hour north of the Central Pacific Beaches.

Costa Rica festivals are fun for the whole family.
Enjoy local festivals (and Costa Ricans LOVE their fiestas!) where you can sample "typical" food and watch the "caballos trotadores" Spanish dancing horses or bullriding events in nearby San Pablo or Puriscal. Tour a local organic coffee farm, watch the one-truck produce market in action on a Saturday morning, and see how tobacco is cured at a local cigar factory. 

 

A birdwatcher's haven, AmaTierra's 3 hectares of mountain forest is home to 2 kinds of Toucans and hundreds of varieties of birds and butterflies. A stream, hiking trails with stunning views, dozens of mango trees and reforested Pochote hardwood are all part of the ecology here. Committed to rainforest conservation and sustainable agriculture, herbalist owner Jill Ruttenberg has created an organic garden and an atmosphere of discovery for learning about tropical plants. Slowly, AmaTierra is also becoming a state-of-the-art wellness center with integrated natural therapies for true rejuvenation.

At AmaTierra guests can glimpse Tico life in a traditional "campo" rural setting, authentically Costa Rican. Here it is not uncommon to encounter cowboys herding Brahma cows down the road, and perhaps to take part yourself in herding cows on a horseback ride through breathtaking mountain vistas.

Location

AmaTierra lies on the winding but wonderfully pothole-free Highway 27, 19 kilometers past Puriscal toward Orotina, about an hour’s drive southwest from San José.

Directions

From San Jose or Juan Santamaria Airport, take the road to Ciudad Colon. Once you're in Ciudad Colon, look out for a sign saying "no hay paso" that means you're going on to a one way street.

Instead turn right at the gas station and then left at the next street and you will see a green AmaTierra sign up high (on a car wash building) stating you are 35 KM from the Hotel. Go to the top of the hill thru the town of Cuidad Colon and turn left before the dirt road. You will see a University of La Paz (Peace) sign on the left. Make sure you follow the road out of town (do not turn right to the U. of Peace), but veer right towards Puriscal and Turubari Park.

After about 20 minutes, you will arrive in Puriscal. About 300 meters past the gas station on the right, you will see a sign for Turrubari - turn left in front of the Red Cross/ICE building. Follow about 3 blocks past the church, and just after the stop light you MUST turn right and then you will follow the signs to Amatierra/Turubari Park. The Hotel is located 17KM or 20 minutes once you leave Puriscal. We are on the right side of the road 2KM before San Pablo and you will see several Green AmaTierra signs to let you know you are close....Always know that if you follow the signs to Turrubari Park that you are on the right track...

It is easy to find and the road is paved the entire way - simply look for the long bamboo fence and wooden gate. If the gate is closed, just honk and the guard will open the gate.

From the Pacific Coast or North - look on your map for a city called Orotina, west of San Jose. You will be heading on the new highway towards Orotina, and passing the toll (Peaje, which costs 480 colones). Continue on the road toward San Jose and take the TIGRE exit to the RIGHT instead of turning toward Orotina. You will be heading to San Pablo de Turrubares (known simply as "San Pablo" or "Turrubares"). You can also follow signs to "Turubari" which is a park on the way to the hotel. About five minutes from Orotina, on the road to Turrubares, you will cross a one-lane bridge. Continue on that road for about 25 to 30 minutes, past Turubari Park heading towards San Pablo. Before you get to the town of San Pablo, you will see a soda (restaurant) called Francini's. You will see the green AmaTierra sign, turn right and then another sharp right. Go 2 km more and see the hotel on your left hand side. It is easy to find - simply look for the long living tree fence and wooden gate. If the gate is closed, simply honk and the guard will open the gate. On your way from Orotina, always stay on the main road, and when in doubt, look for small signs for "Turubari" or the hotel. Either way, when you pass Turubari Park you are about 15 minutes from the hotel. Drive safely.

The owners and staff of AmaTierra are dedicated to protecting the natural environment, to reducing waste and conserving, reusing and recycling resources. Even before we took over the hotel in 2006, the previous owners took care not to cut down any big trees or fruit trees to construct the lodge and buildings here.

Our name, loosely translated as “Beloved Earth” implies this dedication and embodies the belief that human Beings exist as part of the delicate web of nature and, as stewards of the earth must be conscious to minimize our impact on the earth’s ecosystems, especially in a place with so much diversity as Costa Rica.
