Amatierra is simply a magical place! It allowed me to nurture both my need for quiet, restorative pampering and my urge to explore the country in an exciting, adventurous way. On the days we stayed on site, our group welcomed the sunrise with yoga in the amazing yoga shala overlooking the mountains. Toucans would stop by to say hello and a few lucky yogis saw monkeys scampering about. We followed our practice with a fabulous breakfast; hot coffee, pinto gallo, scrambled eggs (the best I've ever had), and the freshest fruit you can imagine. The rest of the day was filled by basking in the sun, walking on the grounds, swimming in the gorgeous pool, or taking advantage of the fabulous bodywork treatments offered. My husband and I are both bodyworkers and are amazed each year by the quality of bodywork offered here! The meals are unbelievably delicious, but fresh and really nourishing. Jill & Bob knew our group wanted a little adventure too, so they set up a zipline trip, surfing lessons, and a trip to a volcano and waterfall. What a perfect way to experience Costa Rica! The rooms are neat and clean and the entire staff really seems to enjoy working there. We went during the last week of April and the weather couldn't have been better; sunny days and virtually no bugs! Bob & Jill have really created a very special retreat here. I cannot say enough good things about this place. At some point, words fail. You need to see this place for yourself!

My mom and I traveled to Ama Tierra in September 2011 for a much-needed retreat. We were looking for a quiet place to rejuvenate, and Ama Tierra provided more than we could have imagined. The place and the services were extraordinary, but I would especially like to compliment Bob and Jill on creating a healing space. We felt spoiled and pampered in a very caring and loving way, and I simply cannot imagine a more perfect place for reflection and connection. This was food for the soul. One last note...we went during the rainy season and it was GORGEOUS and magical, so don't let the idea of low season deter you. It's a completely different experience, and we thought an even more encouraging time for healing. We LOVED our experience here and count it as a blessing in our memory banks.

After a long couple of years, I was due for a yoga retreat style vacation. I had heard good things about Ama Tierra and decided to book. Bob and Jill are the perfect hosts for the week and make sure that your stay is everything you expect. From day trips, spa treatments and food, all taken care of with great thoughts and perfect planning. The food, I have never eaten so well, ever, such great fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and desserts. I had 2 massages and facial with Issabella, a food sensitivity test and chakra / stomach massage with Jill which were relaxing, therapeutic and Jill's food test, extremely close to right on the mark. In my stay at AT, there was a yoga instructor named Chase who was staying there for a while and split the teaching schedule with Jill. They were great classes all around. I am not a great review writer, but I felt that I neede to express my experience at Ama Tierra. It was the trip I needed at the time I needed it

I loved it and I will cherish the amazing memories for a very very long time to come.
This was my first solo trip and naturally a bit nervous but the minute I stepped into Ama Tierra I knew I had nothing to worry about. Jill and Bob(owners) make you feel right at home! The staff are courteous, attentive and nice, particularly Steven (Esteban). He really made my stay more special. He's helpful, informative and very kind. The rooms are basic but clean and spacious with comfortable beds. Although I had prepared myself for any type of bugs or/and species in the room(just b/c of the location)I did not encounter any. The food is superb, all organic and locally sourced. You get to eat in a beautiful terrace with an amazing view and other guests(from all over the world, interesting and like-minded). The yoga studio is out of this world and picture does not do justice. The whole aura of the place is magical and peaceful. I wished I had more time to stay there but I had purchased the 6 day "jungle to the sea" package so had to leave after just 3 days although the second portion of the trip was as nice but I wished I could have stayed longer. I got to meet so many nice people. Got the best massages from Isabel and Jill. If you're looking to unwind, relax and do nothing but to pamper yourself or if you're looking to feel balanced and connected again, this is the place for you. This trip was very tranforming for me. I felt completely rejuvenated, relaxed and inspired. Thank you so much Jill and Bob for the amazing experience!
Room Tip: I think they're all comparable and decent. I stayed at Olivo and liked it.

"A perfect Costa Rica setting to sit back, relax and let the sounds of nature surround us and let the atmosphere fill our minds.
Yoga to start the day, breakfast on the patio overlooking the rainforest. A book by the pool, while watching the
wildlife, birds and butterflies play around. There was time for walks around the organic garden and down to the river
to see more of the property's natural beauty. An afternoon spa treatment to hold us over until dinner.
It was a perfect spot for relaxation and to be catered to, by the coolest Innkeepers ever."

Aptly named Ama Tierra, this serene retreat celebrates natural diversity and is quite the zen epicenter in the verdant hillside of Costa Rica. Ama Tierra is co-owned and operated by Bob & Jill whose hospitality made this an exceptional experience. My solo holiday spanned the New Year, and was precisely what my soul called for, a reprieve from daily demands ripe with gentle breezes kissing early morning yoga sessions in a studio designed to perfectly frame the picturesque locale and canopies below, diverse creatures migrating across the valley and up the creek like toucans, scarlet macaws and white-faced monkeys.
Hearty breakfasts rich in flavor and texture were skillfully made and ample to satisfy without overindulgence. Light lunches and well inspired dinners made this retreat something to remember, long on ambiance and old fashioned interpersonal entertainment. Conversation and melodies courtesy of Jill on piano distinguished these hosts from impersonal larger establishments.
Wine selection - diverse, right down to the champagne on New Years Eve, discriminating connoisseurs: they have a selection for that. A chilean Cab named Caliterra became a fast personal favorite, full bodied, smooth finish. Bob was knowledgeable, informative and entertaining I learned quite a bit about Ama Tierra's origins, the region also of these two remarkable people who've made this retreat locale a true find.
The staff at Ama Tierra was helpful, friendly and eager to ensure my trip included EVERYTHING I was looking for, from deep tissue massage to seeing the elusive whitefaced monkeys on their way up creek at 5:30 in the morning (yikes but well worth the sacrifice of sleep).
If you are looking at excursions, the waterfalls and rope swing provided a great half day of enjoyment. Prepare to scale some rough terrain in pursuit of amazing pics. The natural beauty was breathtaking. Relaxation? The infinity pool and warm sun provided me with a sun-kissed glow, and opportunity to hear the macaws in their daily flight. Walking trails throughout the premises were long on color, texture and wildlife. There are a myriad of other spa services which I indulged in that were reasonably priced and gave my aching muscles that warm buttery feeling.
I love to travel to off the beaten path, and Ama Tierra's casitas nestled into the hillside provided ample privacy, serenity. They were well appointed and comfortable, giving me the sense that I was right at home were it not for the incredibly soothing din of the cicada's not indigenous to my hometown.
Start to finish, this holiday retreat was one of my most memorable, shared with guests from all over the world in the welcoming of Ama Tierra's Bob & Jill, and provided me with the resources to rebalance and begin 2012 with a fresh perspective. Though I rarely travel to the same place twice, Ama Tierra will be on my list of places to visit, again.

We started our trip at AmaTierra, and then changed our plans to go back there instead of going to the beach for the last few days of our visit. It was great to take a yoga class and look out at the sun setting over the jungle, feel the warm breeze, and watch bats flitting about the studio! Bob & Jill made us feel at home, and it was great to talk with the other guests over delicious food on the deck, while enjoying the view.

We even like the fact that it's really difficult to find the place...

I came to Ama Tierra with expectations, and in short it wasn't what I expected - it was better. I was looking for a place to get away from it all and Ama Tierra allows you to do just that. Jill and Bob are fantastic hosts and made the stay even more enjoyable and fulfilling. With Jill's healing therapies and beautiful yoga classes and Bob's helpful nature and fantastic music playlists, I was in good hands. The food - incredible. The scenery - breathtaking. The experience - life changing. Staying here re-energized me for getting back into the chaos that is life. I highly recommend Ama Tierra to anyone looking to focus on their well-being, get away from it all and experience beautiful Costa Rica from a view on the mountains. It doesn't get much better than this.

I had the wonderful opportunity of staying at AmaTierra the first week of August. It was a truly magical and healing experience. The hotel is in a gorgeous location with an overview of the mountains. The yoga studio is breathtaking, the food is delicious, the rooms are modest, but lovely, and the owners, Bob and Jill, are tremendous people. It was a delightful experience meeting their staff and learning more about the Costa Rican culture. In addition to the very restorative hotel, they give you different opportunities for outings such as a visit to the rainforest, equine therapy, ziplining, the beach, among other adventures. I highly recommend AmaTierra. It was a magical experience for me.

I loved my weekend at Ama Tierra, the staff was so friendly, the owners warm and the food great. They even made yucca flour muffins for me, because I am wheat intolerant. I have already recommended this resort to families and solo travelers I meet as a perfect stop off between the beach and the airport in San Jose. So much better than staying in the city.
I felt so safe and cared for...and by the way, they have bathtubs with lots of hot water!

"I just returned from ~9 day stay at AmaTierra for a week long sound immersion retreat facilitated by Tryshe Dhevney, truly one of the most divine beings I know. I don't know of any other place more perfect/appropriate for this type of retreat as AmaTierra to me represented paradise. It is on 8 acres of lush green rainforest with trails, a creek, and numerous native plants and animals including toucans, monkeys, sloths, butterflies, bats, and insects. During the retreat, our daily sessions took place in the yoga dome which is truly a sacred space situated near the top of the property looking directly out into a small valley in the rainforest. Bob and Jill made me feel like family. Kenny was so very welcoming.
The chef, Pablo, is amazing . . .every meal was a creation of happiness and joy and it was so fun to share it with other guests and fellow immersion participants. They do accommodate certain diets/food restrictions, and I would suggest that you double check with the chef all of the ingredients before eating each meal so as to ensure no cross contamination or unintended allergic responses will occur.
The resort is perfect for those who are looking to avoid the touristy areas, yet who may still want reasonable access to Carara national park/rainforest, equine activities, waterfalls, and the beach. I was prepared for and accepted the spiders and bugs in my room as part of this experience knowing that I was in the middle of nature and that insects would abound. I made sure to do a sheet check each night so as to avoid any surprises.
The entire staff went to extra lengths to accommodate numerous requests and to assist in creating a very special experience for the sound immersion retreat (lunch at the waterfall and mineral pools). I truly was able to relax, immerse myself in the rainforest, and in the sounds we created while at AmaTierra.
I am planning to return in the very near future for more rest, relaxation, and healing experiences."

" My husband and I were part of a yoga retreat (18 of us, mostly from Kentucky), and we all loved AmaTierra!! Bob and Jill are such nice, accommodating hosts - they would make anyone feel at home. Kenny, the manager and tour guide, led us on a hike to a waterfall, and helped make our stay enjoyable. Pablo, the chef, is incredible - I so wanted to bring him home with me. Such fabulous meals - like nothing I have had before - so fresh and tasty...I couldn't wait to see what the next meal would be!!
Our casita (room) was quaint and roomy. It had a sitting area, a very comfortable bed, a large closet, and a nice bathroom. There was also a refrigerator in the room, and a small area out front with 2 chairs.
The communal dining area has a wonderful view of the forest, and you'll never know what birds/animals you might see. The pool is very refreshing, with lots of seats under cover if you don't like sunshine. They also have an honor bar, which is becoming more popular on our travels.
The yoga studio is spacious and has quite a unique roof - ask Bob to tell you the story of the roof. Pam is the in house yoga instructor, along with Jill. I had a DEEP tissue massage, and felt so good after. You've got to have a massage here!
Take a short hike down to the tilapia pond - very picturesque!
Thanks Bob and Jill!! ."

" My friend and I needed a vacation to rejuvenate, relax, and find peace away from our busy lives. This was it! You don't have to be a yoga enthusiast to really gain benefits from the staff's practice of gentle yoga and meditation.
Jill and Bob, our hosts, went to great lengths to make us feel safe, comfortable and pampered. Pablo, the chef, made the MOST AMAZING meals from home-grown ingredients right off the property, and fish straight off the boat. Amatierra is located in the mountains away from any city, so you feel a real peace and quiet there.
The sunsets at the yoga studio are beautiful and soothing. You can choose to do an excursion to the volcano, waterfalls, beaches, or just do NOTHING. All the staff were wonderful to us - we will never forget them and the soul healing we experienced on this trip."

"Amatierra is one of the most amazing places on earth. It is hard for me to put into words just how wonderful this yoga retreat was for me, and for my daughter.
The living accomodations were great, the views, the mountains, waking up to singing birds, and the food. I can't say enough about the food. It was delicious, healthy, mostly organic, and when necessary, went out of their way to accomodate your special requests. Of course, Jill and Bob, very special people, who within minutes of meeting you, make you feel like you are old friends. They are good people. They are what makes Amatierra the special place it is.
One more thing, I so enjoyed our yoga sessions with Pam. She is a true delight.
Her classes are taught from the heart . I've practiced yoga for many years, and teach yoga as well, so, both profesionally and personally, Pam is a wonderful yoga teacher and beautiful soul.
Amatierra for me, was a lifechanging experience. I can hardly wait to return."

The casitas are spacious and clean - no problems with bugs despite being in the jungle. They can arrange day trips if you're wanting to see more of Costa Rica. Ama Tierra is truly a retreat - a lovely place to find peace and refill your soul.

I led a group of 18 from Kentucky in a yoga retreat at Amatierra. Our trip couldn't have been better! The entire staff worked hard to make sure this happened: Bob went above and beyond to help me plan; when he found out Kentucky would be in the Final Four the first night of our trip, he arranged a television so we could watch during dinner! He pre-ordered Costa Rican beer and organic wine when he found out we drank.
Jill is an amazing herbalist and bodyworker; she led a healing crystal bowl session and also got us all up dancing and singing along while she played the guitar and piano. Don't miss the chance to use the biomat! Kenny, the hotel manager, is enthusiastic and so knowledgeable! He led us to this amazing waterfall where we swam; we couldn't find a plant or animal that he didn't know! Pam, the resident yoga teacher, accompanied us on several of our day trips and became a member of our yoga family.
And Pablo, the chef and another talented musician, created the most scrumptious meals; we were in culinary heaven! I am still missing his pinto gallo with Lizano Salsa and the tofu pad thai! The open air yoga studio is both beautiful and peaceful. Monkeys and toucans might show up to cheer on your asana session. And Tonyia gave me the best massage I've ever had (and I've had a lot of bodywork in my day)! The rest of the hardworking staff are sweet and polite; it didn't matter that we didn't speak the same language. We felt cared for.
The beach Bob & Jill sent us to was private and truly beautiful and the zipline tour was a pure adrenaline rush! The rooms are clean, the property is eco-friendly, and the every view is breathtaking. I left feeling physically refreshed and spiritually renewed. I cannot recommend this place enough and cannot wait to return!!!

“Another big thumbs-up for this fantastic place!”
My 18-year old daughter and I spent 2 nights at Ama Tierra last week. We loved everything about this gem! The "spiders & scorpions" reviews must have been written by their competition! We have not seen any bugs, not even mosquitoes.
The setting is superb, the food is delicious, and Jill & Bob really do make you feel like you are their personal guests! My daughter had upset stomach after a meal that we had before arriving to Ama Tierra. Jill, the owner, is a herbologist and an expert in Chinese medicine - she took great care of my baby, and the chef had cooked special meals for her; she was back to normal in no time! Jill is also a great singer and an incredible Yoga teacher.
I cannot wait to visit Ama Tierra again!

It is true that Ama Tierra is beautifully situated in the Costa Rican mountains, and that the campus is amazing. Well manicured grounds and comfortable rooms really helped make the stay enjoyable. While that is true, it is the people that make Ama Tierra truly special. Our stay was short, only three nights, but the staff did everything to make it enjoyable.
Our time on site was amazing, the grounds are an excellent place to hike and the yoga facility is really something special with a world class view. We also all had amazing massages. At night, a nice bottle of wine and really delicious meals prepared by Pablo, who also played guitar for us. We took a day trip to Carara park which the staff arranged, really amazing day.
In all, we were blown away by the experience, and the people truly made the trip special. Thanks to Jill, Bob, Kenny and Pablo for making our brief trip absolutely perfect.

I went to Ama Tierra for a solo trip to get some rest, relaxation, yoga, and detox. I really needed this trip in order to just "be". I certainly found what I was looking for too. I packed very lightly, knowing that I'd spend my days in my morning yoga clothes writing in my journal, reading, listening to the sounds, enjoying the sights, and occasionally interacting with others.
Some of the things I packed I never even touched, not once. You won't need to pack a book, there are plenty in the lobby to choose from. Even Costa Rica books, so don't bother packing any. Also, you won't need to pack shampoo, soap, sunscreen, bug spray, or flashlights. I packed all of this, including 2 books, and didn't need to.
I thought this would be helpful for others who like to travel lights as well. If you are not into good food, good company, relaxation, or solitude, don't bother.
I on the other hand, found exactly what I was looking for.
Also with the detox program, I came home 5 lbs lighter too! Always a plus for anyone.

Our vacation at amatierra was a wellness package for 8 days. It is well located less than an hour from San Jose, within close distance to many day eco trips. Which there staff are happy to arrange for you. The food organic based, local and seasonal fruit and veggies, fresh fish and prepared with heart centered care and attention to details.
The yoga studio & spa is a sanctuary for healing and growth with views of the lush tropical folage. This was a fun and relaxing family vacation with our 22& 25 yr.old daughters.
Jill and Bob the owners were wonderful hosts. Bob is a great story teller and Jill a real renaissance women. Some of her many talents include being a master herbalist, yoga instructor, massage therapist, and sings and plays the piano beautifully. She had a crystal bowl med. one eve that was out of this world.

Amatierra is one of the most relaxing and peaceful hotels that we visited. I can not emphaise enough about the friendliness of the staff and how they work to make your stay so enjoyable. The food is out of this world, with many ingredients coming from gardens on the property or being delivered from local suppliers. Amatierra embraces local organic cooking. The range of cooking skill from their chef Pablo is extensive and you will not have to same meal twice. His skill with the local ingrediants is clearly evident and makes some of the best meals we have eaten in awhile. Find time for him to prepare some afternoon snacks for you during your visit. If you are lucky he will join everyone after dinner with his guitar and play a mix of local and American music.
Everyone is very friendly and helpful, but they also give you your space to enjoy the facility, which is very much a retreat facility. Onsite they have a great yoga studio that looks out to the mountatins. If you are fortunate you may see some monkeys or iguannas from up there. They also have an on-site spa offering many different wonderful treatments.
We had the opportunity to take a journey to Cararra National Park and Victor gave us a wonderful tour where we saw many unique rainforest animals. We would highly recommend finding time to go on one of his trips. He is passionate about nature and has a keen eye to spot plants, animals and birds, even all the way up in the canopy. If you are lucky, Victor may even take you to a local soda (roadside restaurant) near Cararra for a wonderful typical Costa Rican lunch. Do try the fruit drinks there, they are amazing.
The staff, especially Kenny and Bob, have many options available to you for day trips from Amatierra. We also went snorkeling and saw a local waterfall during our stay. They also have arrangements with many local drivers so you don't need to worry about tranportation, and we found there rates for drivers very fair.
The rooms are very quaint and have everything that you need. They also have DVD players if you want to bring some movies or Bob has a good collection of his own that he shares with the guests.
Amatierra is more than a hotel, it is an inclusive retreat location. If you are looking for hotel with an urban nightlife and are not looking to take things slow, this is not the hotel for you. We would highly recommend Amatierra to our friends and family. We are anxious to visit again.

I can't say enough good things about my visit to AmaTierra. Such a beautiful setting to take a Yoga class, have a massage or treatment, walk around the grounds, relax by the pool, meet interesting guests, or lounge in a private hammock on the patio of your casita. Bob and Jill were the best hosts ever, and their staff were just great.
Their chef, Pablo, smilingly brought out a special (and delicious, as was every single meal) vegetarian dish for one of our party every night, and Kenny treated us like one of his family. We felt welcomed and cared for every minute. We started our days with a magical Yoga class in the beautiful outdoor pavilion overlooking the tree tops - I can't think of anything better!
I highly recommend AmaTierra, and plan to go back often to relax, de-stress, and gather the peace and beauty of the rain forest in this soothing and beautiful place.

Yoga studio is magnificent, imagine toucans in the nearby trees and falcons soaring in the distant sky with the background of costa rica hillsides. Food was fantastic, new chef, I will miss him! Creative food with a healthy twist.
Jill and Bob made us feel welcome and comfortable. Jill is an herbalist, gifted healer and massage therapist.
It was a bit of a shock at the airport to see all of the resort and cruise tourists! I am hoping to bring some of the peace and tranquility of Ama Tierra home with me.

This experience is not for everyone. In fact, when I first put my bags down in my room I wondered what I was going to do for the next 5 days, but your experience will be what you make of it. When you talk to Jill & Bob (owners, who are accessible all the time) they work with you to plan what to do on your trip. We figured out what excursions would be best for me. The town is really small so Jill, Bob, and Kenny (manager) know everyone and they can tell you about each excursion option and who runs them. Something not included is transportation - locals who will drive you where you need to go. If you go with people at the hotel, your transportation costs get split. If you're staying for a while and want to take a lot of excursions, then you might want to inquire about renting a car. Turu Ba Ri park is a great experience. I almost didn't do the zipline, but I knew if I didn't I would never forgive myself. It's totally safe and if you're a big baby about it (like I was) the instructors will walk you through it and won't just hook you up and push you off the platform...although I'm sure mine was ready to do that with me.
There is still enough to do at the hotel. They have DVDs, hiking trails, morning yoga, and Jill usually has another class at night - we did chakra tuning, meditation, quarts bowls, and other exercising in the evening before dinner. I would call it a retreat, not so much a resort. They're not trying to entertain you all the time, because people usually choose a retreate to relax and get away from being busy.
They don't call it the "rainy season" for nothing. It rained every day, which provides for beautiful landscapes and clean air. Although it does limit what you're able to do. I would rather have been reading my book poolside instead of indoors. You also have to plan your excursions early in the day. Of course, if you go during the dry season, this isn't an issue.
The food is delicious, although you don't have many options. They do accomodate dietary restrictions. They won't let you go hungry either. I came back from an excursion starving and Kenny made some lunch for me. Lunch is VERY light - usually just a salad and some cracker/crouton things. I was drinking a lot of tea during the day, so I wasn't really hungry while I was there. Some things on the menu - watermelon ceviche, pad thai with shrimp, almond fish, brownies made with yucca flower, and Kenny's quesadilla.
Something I didn't think to ask before I left was "how many other guests will be there". There was only 1 other guest at the resort while I was there and we had a good time. If you don't have a problem being the only person there, then don't ask. I just kept getting scared thinking about "what if she wasn't here".
I just wanted to get away from NYC and go someplace to detatch from everything...and I got it. With no TV, limited internet, and limited phone use I didn't know if I could get through it, but once I landed back in the states to buzzing blackberry with 300 unanswered e-mails and a dozen voicemails, I wished I could catch the first plane back.

I came to Ama Tierra with an injured hand and knees as I fell at the airport before take off,as soon I arrived,Jill the healer gave me Arnica, and brought me to the healing center and staring nurturing my body.
I had an amazing and profound time at my stay at Ama Tierra, the food, the kind staff, the music play thru the day raises your vibrations. I felt like I was at a friends home, in which I feel Jill and Bob have become my new global friends.I would also recommend to experience Sweet Prince Ranch very special healing horses ,were it will open up your heart.
I came to experience Pur Vida as I like what costa Rica stands for and got pure life and more.

Dear Bob and Jill, you might think that like minded people are in your same backyard, yet that's why perhaps why travelers travel to find kinship with heart and mind, well that's what I found in AmaTierra, thru the open doors sounds of rushing nature, water below, butterflies, birds, and music. The views from the deck everlasting thru time you can touch the fog in the morning, see the clouds changing deciding sun, rain,or lighting and thunder.
The environment gives "Your soul Peace".Each morning Yoga and meditating as a collective group with Jill,a new awaking occurs. Is their anything better than radiating calm, peace, connecting to the source? That's what AmaTierra gave me as I listened to the whispers of the breeze, how lucky was I a butterfly landed spreading their wings of rebirth and joy. Much care was given from the staff.Jill the healer gave me a 110%percent..Bob ,Mr.music and wine stewart was kind and caring. It was a "Love and Above" experience. ..I wish everyone how I felt at Ama Tierra and Costa Rica......

My girl friend of many years and I decided we needed to do something special for our 70th year of life. My luck we came across Ama Tierra on the internet. What a wonderful blunder that was. Bob and Jill, (soon to be grandparents) treated us like family. Since is was actually my birthday on the day we arrived, we celebrated with a special dinner and wine. Needless to say all of the meals were excellent. We picked fresh herbs once for meals yet to be cooked. Bob is an encyclopedia for music, especially jazz and Jill knows her herbs.
We were invited to go through her organic garden while she pointed out the different herb and fruits growning there. The daily Yoga class was the best, especially in the early morning overlooking the greenery and the magnificant mountains.
It was rainy season so every thing was a lush green and streams flowed through the property. I had a wonderful massage done by Socorra, a foot treatment, and a facial exfolliation with chocolate mask. ( not all at the same time) Also try the Bio mat. Just lie there on crystals with a pleasant aroma therapy, over looking the green mountain.
It rained while I enjoyed this treatment and it sort of completed a perfect day for me. We also attended church on Sunday. Neither of us speak Spanish but can understand some, so the homily wasn't especially meaningful, but the church was quaint and pleasing also well attended. Causal is the word of the day. We were decidedly overdressed with our highheels and "sunday clothes". I would not have had it any other way.
If you are looking for nightlife and continuous entertainment this is not the place. We listen to music from Bob's massive collection. Jill played the piano and my friend sang show tunes with her. On our last night we did the electric slide.
This was perfect for us because we needed to slow down, eat well and catch up on each others lives since we live in different states and don't see each other much. I am recommending this facility to all of my yoga instructors and classmates at home. I hope I will be able to go again, sometime before my 80th birthday:)

My wife and I chose Amatierra's honeymoon package over many other locations and packages that were out there. We did our homeowork and chose this honeymoon because you cannot beat the locations, the packages, and the service that was provided. Bob and Jill were amazing! Once you have checked out this review, please go to their website and read the rest of the review that wasnt posted here.
Honeymoon package:
10 days, most meals included, 4 massages, 6 yoga sessions, rain forest canopy tour, hot springs and dinner at the hot springs, candle light dinner at lost iguana, trip to a waterfall (not included but worth the trip), three meals a day at Ama Tierra, a trip to Turabari to go zip lining and have an eco tour, beaches, hiking, surfing, great food, lots of nature, you will see three distinct environments (cloud forest, dry forest, costal rain forest)
Amatierra:
If you can imagine a home away from home, one you have never been to, in the dry forests of Costa Rica (where some of the best Costa Rican coffee is grown). That is Ama Tierra. Treated like family, home cooked meals three times a day, served coffee, beer, wine or fresh mango or papaya juice whenever you like. Total strangers who, for some reason traveled to the same destination, (Australians, Belgians, Canadians, Americans) congregating in the main living room singing to Jill playing the piano; Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle and whatever other band you can think of that would fit in that genre. Fresh mangos dripping from trees everywhere. An infinity pool waiting for you if it gets too hot. The energy at Ama Tierra is unique and words will never come close to describing our experience. And to top it Jill and Bob officiated our wedding ceremony in their gorgeous yoga studio, overlooking the vally forest.
This is an eco friendly hotel. It’s focus is on growing its own food as much as possible, staying environmentally friendly, home cooked meals, creating a home atmosphere and bringing it all together with yoga, meditation and a spa. There is yoga twice a day, three meals a day are included and you have a trip to turabari included where you can zip line, rappel down a mountain, go to a butterfly garden and check out the iguanas. If you go zip lining you will have a nice gondola ride over a valley and you have a great view of the park. Now back to Ama Tierra, Bob and Jill have put together a very relaxing place to hang out in Costa Rica. As mentioned, there are three meals a day, breakfast and lunch are very light meals and dinner is very hearty. They have an exceptional selection of wines and usually have some kind of tea or juice available at all times along with water and coffee. The atmosphere is amazing. Its very much like hanging out at home. Bob used to work in the music industry and has a great selection of music which is always playing and after dinner Jill usually plays the guitar or the piano while other residents sing songs into the evening. The accommodations are very comfortable, they provide you with a bottle of wine, all of your meals and a trip to turabari along with a massage for you and your partner and two yoga sessions a day. My wife and I had our ceremony in their yoga studio. Jill acted as the officiant and Bob took the photos. They made our stay one that we will not forget. Oh I forgot to mention the birds and monkeys. They are everywhere.
kabe4242. Washington DC, District of Columbia. Review from TripAdvisor. June 2010.
Jill, Bob and their staff went to great lengths to ensure our group's stay was perfect. They provided space for our meetings, yoga instruction at times that accommodated our schedule of events and even brought in an esthetician because our group wanted facials. They arranged our excursions to Turubari Park.
It was a blast and quite the adrenalin rush zip lining through the rain forest. We went to a horse farm and worked with horses which provided a therapy that can only be described as spiritual and extremely healing. The horses were magnificent. Of course the retail therapy in Jaco Beach was fun too. Jill is especially wonderful at taking into consideration any special dietary needs or needs in general.
I forgot a medication that I have to take daily. After coming back from an excursion, Jill literally drove me to 4 pharmacies. Jill determined to find the medication called her local pharmacy when we arrived back at Ama Tierra. It was delivered that evening. I do not know of any other place that I have visited and I have been to many places around the world that would have gone to such great lengths.
Our visit to Ama Tierra was everything we had hoped for and more. Oh did I mention the wonderful daily massages and other body treatments provided by Jill and her staff...I am still in a Zen like state of mind after being back in reality for a 9 days. LOL.
ButterflyHollow, Tennessee. Review from TripAdvisor. June 2010.
We shared our 20 year wedding anniversary at AmaTierra and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We filled our time with a few excursions, but mostly just soaking in the forest, the rhythm of its people, and the sounds of nature.
Each day was started with a gentle yoga workout in their amazing studio and we pampered ourselves a few times with massages, which were some of the best we have ever had. The meals were phenomenal, the grounds were well maintained and the staff went above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and at home.
A few recommendations for future guests.... ask for one of the casitas close to the creek. You'll enjoy waking up to the birds and ripple of water. At some of the others casitas you might hear a little traffic from the nearby road.
On your way in, have your driver stop by a grocery store so you can stock up on waters, snacks, wine etc. Not to worry if you don't, they have most everything available to purchase at the lodge too. Ask about the AmaTierra foundation and how you can help. Your vacation will mean so much more to you if you find a way to give back.
Thank you Bob and Jill for making our anniversary one that we won't ever forget.

I took my mum for 5 days R & R and lots of yoga. This is quiet clean and very friendly off the beaten path place.
Food is excellent healthy organic. Mum is a veggie and was so happy to eat so well. Everything was made fresh.
Bob's wine collection really good and reasonable priced. The yoga center has a 270 degree view of the rain forest. What a great experience. massages are offered for a very reasonable price especially compared to USA.
I had to chuckle at some of the other reviews about no air, one food serving...no TV.... um guys it is central america, an organic health center, and the rain forest. Stay in the USA if you want your usual 5 star service. A lack of TV meant all the guests actually talked to each other, while we listened to JIll on the piano!

My wife and I went to Amatierra for our Honeymoon. All in all, a great decision. We bought the seven day package and they took care of everything - Transit from the airport, all of our meals, and gave us a couple options for day trips (we went to the beach and on a rain forest tour, both amazing).
This was a great help as we were pretty busy with the wedding at the time. Mostly, we just hung out on the beautiful property, did yoga every day, read books, swam in the pool, and watched a few movies at night. We also went to San Pablo, a small village within walking distance, met some locals who were very nice, and bought some fruit. It was a wonderful place to relax, the staff was excellent and helpful, the food was great, and I have no regrets.
I've read some of the other reviews, and it seems like a few people go there with unrealistic expectations. Keep in mind that it is a retreat. If you're looking for tons of adventure, live music/theater, nightlife, lavish accommodations, even cable television, Amatierra might not be what you're looking for. But if you just want to hang out and relax in Costa Rica, it's perfect.

I traveled with my sister & we did a adventure/wellness 5 day stay. The trip was amazing! Bob, Jill & Kenny are very gracious hosts. There is not a ton of things to do at AmaTierra besides laying by the pooling, practicing yoga, and hiking so Bob has many excursions to offer.
He does an excellent of job of presenting opportunities for fun/adventure but not being pushy. My sister & I went horseback riding, took a trip to Jaco Beach, and went ziplining. We also took advantage of the wonderful spa services. The yoga studio is absolutely gorgeous & the classes are great for yogis at all levels. My sister & I had the most amazing, relaxing, fun time at AmaTierra.
We literally cried when we left! I have never taken a trip that made me feel so relaxed, rejuvinated, clear headed, and healthy when I came back home.
This is the PERFECT place for someone seeking relaxation & healthy living. AmaTierra is so beautiful, and Bob & Jill are such fantastic, welcoming people.

Lost Iguana/Cloud forest:
When Cathryn and I got to are room, we were like “are you kidding me?” The view was absolutely gorgeous!!! A fully active volcano set in the rain forest, humming birds, tucans, macaws and the cloud forest. Lost Iguana is off of the beaten path. It is so mountainous that you need to have the staff pick you up in their golf carts to get you around the resort. There are miles of nature trails on the resort and even a couple of water falls. They have a bar side pool and a very nice restaurant. It is on 180 acres of rain forest/cloud forest a few miles from an active volcano. In fact your room has a direct view of the rain forest and the volcano. The resort is beautiful. It is not a “typical” resort. Its made for you to relax, take it slow and enjoy nature. Here most of your meals are included, but not all. What is included is all breakfasts, a massage for you and your wife, a candle lit dinner, eco thermals (hot springs and then dinner at the springs), rainforest canopy tour and a bottle of wine and we took a trip to a local waterfall (this wasn’t included but should be explored). I could go on forever explaining the canopy tour and the eco thermals. You can email me if you want further explanation. You will have to pay for taxi service if you leave the resort. Sometimes the staff can hook you up with a ride on the employee van, but sometimes their van is full and you have to take a taxi. The taxi is $25.00 each way. You are near the city of La Fortuna, which is nice to walk around, kind of touristy but they have some nice restaurants to eat at. You will be so busy here that you will have to schedule your day. You wont be bored. In fact, your next stop at Ama Tierra will be nice, because its all about relaxing.
Costa Verde/Costal Rain forest:
When Juan our taxi through the hole trip dropped us off, I said to the receptionist, “Bob said that we would have an ocean view, is that right?”. The receptionist replied “sir, you have the nicest room in the hotel building you will be staying at”. Costa Verde comprises eight or so buildings, our hotel building was one of the nicer ones and we had the nicest room with the best view. At the very top of the building, the view and room you see on the website is the same room my wife and I stayed in.. again where were like “you gotta be kidding me”. We were so impressed, elated and glad to be there. We immediately started to take a trip down to the beach. Its about 15 minutes walk. It is a little dangerous, because the roads are very windy and the people drive crazy. Take my advice, take the bus. Its $1.00 each way for 2 people. The worst part of taking the bus is having to wait. A bus comes by every 15 minutes, so its no big deal. Costa Verde has 3 to 5 restaurants on site. They are all excellent but a little pricy. Here no meals are included. You are on your own. You will have a hard time finding a meal for two under $40.00. It can be expensive. Best bet is to go into town, by bus, stop at a supermarket and get some food and liquor. You have decent sized refrigerator in your room. You can take home your leftovers for a late night snack. Stay away from shellfish here.. anything else is ok. Ok, so the hotel is amazing, lets talk about Manuel Antonio National Park. Do yourself a favor, go to google and type in Manuel Antonio National Park. Read about it then go hike the whole park. OMG its amazing. I am not even going to attempt to describe it but I will throw out words that will relate. Monkeys, lizards, crabs, humming birds, insane bamboo, hidden coves, beautiful beaches, rocky beaches, hermit crabs, blue water, more monkeys, iguanas, long hiking trails, very technical hiking trails, exhaustion, mud, snorkeling, surfing, lots of fun.
Juan our driver:
Bob sets you up with Juan. I cannot put him in the “taxi” category. He is a great driver. He will pick you up at San Jose airport and will take you to Lost Iguana, then he will pick you up and take you to Ama Tierra and then he will take you to Costa Verde and then back to San Jose airport. Juan is a great guy. Very nice and very safe. He is probably the most punctual person I have ever come in contact with. This guy typically has to drive four hours to get where you are, to pick you up and take you where you need to go. Usually he is early. I cannot say enough about Juan.. great guy. Next time I go to Costa Rica, he is going to be my driver

My whole body felt like liquid mercury, all flimsy and slippery, and I could barely slide into the car when we left Turu Ba Ri after our Superman zip line experience. But I was still laughing and so thrilled that I had done something I never thought I could do. I jabbered away, reliving every moment out loud so it would be emblazoned in my slightly crowded 57-year-old memory bank.
My daughter nicknamed me “Super Mom” and I think was quite pleased that I had passed my first adventure test with, um, “flying” colors. I say “first” because I had no idea what she had planned to further challenge me later on.
But at the same time, she was smart enough to know that I needed to drain the adrenaline and quit blathering non-stop so we set out for AmaTierra Retreat and Wellness Center in nearby San Pablo.
We arrived late afternoon and turned off the road into what I can only describe as a sanctuary of peace. AmaTierra is tucked into the side of a mountain overlooking an exquisite lush green valley with views that seem to go on forever in all directions. As we got out of the car, my first impression was that of natural silence – bird calls, trees whispering and, from somewhere, a soft and gentle music was wafting.
We were greeted by Bob, the co-owner with his wife, Jill, and were immediately ushered to our bungalow “casita” so we could settle in and get ready for dinner. The casitas are discreetly spaced for privacy and ours was most fine indeed. We discovered two large beds, soft lighting, a bathroom with tub, and creature comforts that included a coffee maker, TV and DVD player. There was also a lovely, unidentifiable aroma that made me want to breathe deeply.

I visited Amatierra with a bunch of collegues to learn together and share relationships. It was the perfect place. Yoga in the morning, amazing food, great meeting space, pool to cool off when it got hot in the afternoon, wine and warm environment made it prefect.
Got a few massages as well to perfectly mix business with relaxation. Great people running the place who had arranged for our trip the next day to the beach, hotel and all.
Spend a little more on airfare, a little more time getting there and then enjoy your time here.
Very affordable.

A group of twenty of us stayed here for a business retreat. It was perfect! The staff went out of their way to accommodate our needs, the yoga studio was a sublime location to meet with a 270 degree view of the valley, and the food was yummy and healthy.
They took great care of us-- I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a intimate retreat center.

When we arrived at Amatierra, we had just come from a really amazing hotel / resort on the Rainy side of the country. The rainforest was magical, so halfway through our trip we were a little bummed to be leaving and heading to Amatierra.
When we arrived we were greeted and welcomed by Bob and Kenny, who were very friendly and accommodating. As soon as we walked through the door, we were sat down for a late lunch and served some seviche. It was some of the best seviche I had ever had. The flavors were so fresh and bold. Up to that point in Costa Rica, our accommodations and rooms had been fabulous, but the food was not quite up to par. The first meal at Amatierra had easily surpased all previous meals in the Country in taste and quality of ingredients.
On the way to our room, I noticed a mango tree (I had never seen one before). Bob told us that they had something like 25 mango trees at the resort. They were all 30+ years old. If you've never seen a mango tree, they are truly magical and provide excellent shade.
Our room was really nice. It wasn't nice like the resort we stayed in, but I liked the change of pace. Plenty of room, and despite being in the high 80's outside, it was quite cool in the room without air conditioning.
That night we had dinner at Amatierra on the balcony outside. At sunset, the view of the mountains was amazing. We were served fresh tuna, sashimi style. It was one of the best pieces of fish I have ever had. It was served with two traditional Costa Rican sides, and you really could taste the love that was put into it.
The next day at breakfast, we were delighted yet again. They served either yogurt with ground flaxseed and granola or rice and beans with your choice of egg. My wife had the yogurt (which was great) and I had the rice and beans with egg. Wow. The beans were served with cilantro and were some of the best rice and beans I've ever had. On the side, I had 2 poached eggs, cooked perfectly. When I put my fork in the first egg I was surprised. The yolk was a rich orange and was much thicker than any egg I've ever seen. I've read about eggs that looked so healthy and tasted like heaven, but I had never had one. To top it off, they had homemade whole wheat bread with pineapple preserves. From then on, we knew that our meals were something to look forward to.
We had some excursions, one to the small town nearby on Saturday, which is fresh produce day. We also went to a nature reserve. We had massages at Amatierra that were really amazing, and even did yoga one morning. The yoga was amazing with tropical birds singing and a magical view of the mountains.
The place felt so homey, one evening we found ourselves in the lobby reading some of their collection of books. That's really the best part about Amatierra. They do their best to make your trip comfortable and more importantly they make you feel at home.
We hope to return on our next Costa Rican adventure.

Ama Tierra is a terrific retreat setting owned by folks who love Costa Rica and ensuring their guests have a wonderful experience there. We arrived Friday morning for 5 days of relaxation.
While there's lots to do in the area, we chose yoga, massage, some work with Jill who's a gifted herbalist - a real restorative trip. The setting and facilities are as beautiful as they appear in the photos, and our hosts we both gracious and fun.
Great food, great location, and the energy of the mountains can't be beat. We'll certainly return!!

Bob and Jill are wonderful people on a mission to make the world a better place. They were very hospitable and passionate about what they do.
The food was absolutely divine. It was the best food we had in Costa Rica during the two months we were there. The massage and yoga was very healing and refreshing. The Music we played with Jill was a lot of fun. She's a great musician.
The setting is very beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed every moment at their establishment. It's a wonderful breath of fresh air at the AmaTierra! I would recommend it to anyone that goes through Costa Rica.
Thank you Bob and Jill.

Our experience at Amatierra is truly one that is beyond words; but I’ll try…
Before coming to Amatierra, we had no idea that we were embarking on a spiritual journey of balance and healing; little did we know that we were destined to visit this wonderful place. We arrived at the airport and Juan was there to pick us up. He took care of everything; all we had to do was jump in and start on a beautiful drive to Amatierra. Juan spoke perfect English and was very knowledgeable about Costa Rica, it’s plants and wildlife; foods and culture… he taught me a little Spanish on the way too; I forgot most of it by the time we got there.
When we got to Amatierra, Bob was there to greet us... that was the first of many interesting conversations we would have with Bob during our trip. Bob makes sure that everyone is taken care of, happy and enjoying themselves… that’s just his personality. As I walked down to our casa I remember thinking “wow, this place is beautiful”; not only in the sense of its form, but also its energy. Later in the trip my mom commented to me that “this place opens your heart”, I guess that’s what I was feeling.
Our room was clean and comfortable; I would later spend many mornings on our patio reading a book as birds and butterflies came to visit me on a regular basis. We came here for a family reunion and all 3 generations were all lodged close together… Bob did not miss a thing; every detail was taken care of in order for us to have a comfortable stay.
The food… OH MY GOD… the food was incredible! Everything was delicious. Fresh, organic, wonderfully prepared… that’s all I have to say about that! It was PERFECT. Kenny accommodated for some of my dietary needs as well without question. Kenny takes care of business... whatever you need, Kenny will get! Kenny is on the ball and friendly. It certainly made our trip care free knowing that Kenny was taking care of us no matter what. Hey Kenny, did you find yourself a girl at the fiesta? Ha-ha.
The yoga studio overlooks an incredible tapestry of forestry unlike anything I have ever seen. Yoga twice a day; my wife enjoyed this thoroughly. Since we’ve been back she can’t bring herself to do yoga: “it’s just not the same!” she says. Delilah did the classes in the morning and Jill in the afternoon. Delilah is a great instructor and a wonderful person with a great energy. As a matter of fact, ERVERYONE who works there has a balanced and positive energy, it’s quite remarkable.
Jill is a very gifted woman, a homeopath/ herbalist; I just call her a healer. Through yoga, energy massages and consultation she has improved the health and balance of my entire family and for that we are forever indebted to her. We took home her suggestions and are living much improved lives because of it. My wife can finally sleep through the night now after 30 years of insomnia; incredible! Jill also did a great service to me and my son; we are both on our way to a much improved self because of Jill. Thanks Jill!
Excursions. We went on a few excursions; all of them well worth it! We visited a wildlife reserve nearby and saw awesome plants, animals and butterflies. Victor our tour guide was an encyclopedia. Did you know that over 25% of the land in Costa Rica is reserved for conservation? Isn’t that amazing? We took a horseback riding trip through the mountains of the rainforest; I cannot describe the beauty of the landscape so I will not even try. We visited a nearby beach… the water was warm and the tide stretched out. My son loved wading in the water as I swam out to be pounded by the big waves coming in some 100 feet away.
Our favorite excursion was our trip to the horse ranch to visit Marsha and Mark. This indescribable place has changed our lives. Yes, I said changed our lives. The energy of this place overtakes you as soon as you get there; it’s unbelievable. Marsha and Mark have created a TRUE harmony and balance between the environment, horses and humans. From this balance emanates a powerful energy and peace. This allows you to live in the Now and therefore creates a portal to a vertical dimension in which you access your formless self; your true Being. Sound crazy? It’s the truth. We realized that this type of balance and respect is what we have been striving for within our lives... this place showed us that this is truly possible. We spent hours afterwards talking with Marsha and Mark. I think I may be getting too existential for a review… so let’s move on…
We met a lot of interesting people, made some friends, had a lot of adventures and lived life to the fullest at our stay at Amatierra. We also brought back a little piece of Amatierra home with us. Bob would say “Pura Vida”. I would not argue with him!
We will be back to Amatierra soon, I wouldn’t want to go any ware else! Than you to everyone at Amatierra... we'll see you soon!

It was my first time to Costa Rica, and I will definitely go back. I'm certain that the main reason for this is the wonderfully warm and nurturing experience I had at Ama Tierra. I didn't really know what to expect having never travelled to this region of the world before, but within a matter of hours I felt completely at home. Jill and Bob (the owners of Ama Tierra) and their incredibly hospitable staff which consists of local Costa Ricans make you feel at home from the moment you arrive. Their warmth is sincere. The oasis that they have created at Ama Tierra is largely a reflection of them and the energy they have brought to this beautiful mountainous region of Costa Rica. I left there feeling very nurtured and replenished spiritually and physically. Oh, and the FOOD...divine!
Mirelle927, ottawa. Review from TripAdvisor. february 2010 , family trip.
This is a great place to stay when visiting Costa Rica - I highly recommend it to people travelling alone or with a group of friends. It is an oasis of tranquility close to many very wonderful attractions some widedly known and others less frenquented, "little gems".
We spent 1 week in this little paradise with extended family and had a wonderful time - we all did in spite of our various interests. We came back rejuvenated and we were all very pleased with our trip. Everything was perfect: the setting in the rain forest with a lot of birds and butterflies to admire; the sunshine every day; and a very relaxing atmosphere. Our little cassitas were beautiful, clean, and surprisingly cool and comfortable without a/c which was wondedrful. The common areas are great too, very open and welcoming, with beautiful views of the forest. Every night we had an amazing dinner on the veranda, with the sounds of the night, the cool breeze, little candles and some great organic wine. Absolutely romantic. Every meal was very special made with local and fresh ingredients and served in the company of other travellers that we came to know after a few days.
Yoga everyday was a luxury in itself. Every morning at dawn and every night at dusk we enjoyed a 1 hour yoga session. One day we saw toucans by the yoga studio. Very striking colourful birds. So, good idea to bring a camera for the morning yoga; we did not, so we missed a great photo opp. The Ama Tierra yoga studio and the whole atmosphere and magic of the place is hard to beat for anyone interested in yoga.
Bob and Jill's hospitality was great and all the staff was very caring and dedicated. We especially appreciated Kenny who went out of his way many times to accomodate our needs as a family.
I enjoyed the day trips to the beach (although hard to find shade - but the beach was really nice), horseback riding (apparently wonderful), the nature park (especially the butterfly garden), the waterfall (apparently one of the best excursion - I missed it), and walks to the nearby village (I really enjoyed the village - not at all "touristy" - with a nice square, little shops where you can get snacks and fruits, and a beautiful mango orchard that my husband and I walked to)
I don't really have any critique to make: Some of our family group found the cicadas a little loud in the middle of the day. I kind of liked it in fact. This is a very natural environment... there is no over-landscaping - just a lot of beautiful interesting plants and flowers in natural settings. Everything is "real".
For people looking for a beach vacation - The beach is 1 hour+ away - not ideal -- but 2 trips are included with the package so you can spend 2 full days at the beach. To cool down after a long walk, there is a nice freah water pool on the hotel grounds. very cool and refreshing.
Big Bonus for me: No worries about being ill -- the water is pure spring water and wonderful - the food is fresh and none of us got sick - far from it, we actually felt better! If you are interested in alternative approaches to health, this place has lots to offer. Some of our family members did benefit from consultation with Jill, a well known herbalist.
A great place if you enjoy nature, yoga, a healthy lifestyle, and if you want to know and encourage local people and local businesses.
Another big bonus: there is no waiting in line to arrange day trips, departures etc... it is a small resort and everything is very personalized - the hosts are constantly striving to make your vacation a success. It is a great feeling..
Hamilton, Review from TripAdvisor. february 2010 , yoga trip, couples
This property and its owners are delightful. My partner and I were collected from the airport as promised and driven into the countryside outside of San Jose. We felt very much off the beaten track in the forested mountainside above San Pablo Turrubares (which is within walking distance).
The package that we chose included 3 meals a day - All delicious and healthy! A daily yoga class - just right in a beautiful new open-air studio! A massage, which led us to have a couple more and two day trips to a beach resort and rain-forest adventures, respectively. We really enjoyed our fellow travellers at Ama Tierra; as well and all those who looked after us, most of whom are from the neighbouring villages. Bob and Jill (the proprietors) have created an oasis of calm and relaxation in a quiet corner of CR.
Also note that Jill is a great Herbalist in the methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine - I came away feeling very looked after and much healthier than when I arrived. Cannot say enough good things about this place - there is so much more - fresh fruit juice everyday, library, hammocks, and on and on.
We'll be back!

My first trip to Costa Rica couldn’t have been any more wonderful than it was. I traveled to Costa Rica for the purposes of attending a spiritual retreat – a cellular activation and shift to mark and celebrate the beginning of what promises to be the most amazing year of my life to date, 2010.
The event was organized and planned out for myself and 11 other excited and committed attendees for the week immediately after Christmas.
We were graciously welcomed at Ama Tierra Wellness Resort located in San Pablo De Turrubares Costa Rica.
Our hosts Bob and Jill welcomed each and everyone of us with open arms and hospitality that would make anyone feel as though you’d been a part of their family for most of your life.
The wellness resort is a sanctuary of quiet, beauty, love, and kindness. In Costa Rica their highly regarded and often spoken mantra is pura Vida meaning pure life. Ama Tierra’s Resort Manager Kenny exemplifies the pure essence of the spirit and meaning of those well wishes.
The resort lies nestled upon the mountain side overlooking the beautiful valley of lush green landscape and on the high peaks you can enjoy the view of the ocean from a far. A particular treat if you venture up the hill to view the sunset which occurred for us starting at around 5:15 nightly.
The resort boasts the finest of foods prepared daily with the loving hands of the dedicated staff for which the planning of each guests dietary requirements is closely cared for by Jill. One of the talents that struck me the most was Bob’s innate skillful and truly earnest interest in the art of conversation. He can engage anyone in conversation in the most respectful and curious of ways. His manner and his interest in talking with each and every quest throughout their stay comes from a genuine place of interest in both who the guest is individually; however additionally from ensuring the guest is going to be able to have the most unique experience during their stay not only at the resort but also in Costa Rica in general.
He loves the country so much and it’s truly his wish for each and every visitor to have the experience of a lifetime and equally fall in love with its beauty and its splendor.
The yoga studio, healing center and massage areas are beyond magnificence. The teak hardwood floors defy description in terms of the craftsman ship and attention to detail that went into completing truly a work of art. Overlooking the valley and reaching out to the mountains and sky at the same time high above the tree’s the tranquility of the space and healing means by which Jill provides her yoga instruction amongst other highly skilled talents puts your heart in a place of oneness with all that is, that truly takes us out of our daily stresses and reconnects us to Mother Earth.
My stay in Costa Rica at Ama Tierra was beyond description in terms of the joy and satisfaction it brought to me in terms of a quiet sanctuary and retreat away from home.
Anyone considering visiting the country of Pure Life has to absolutely include in their travel itinerary a visit to AmaTierra wellness resort. The rooms are quaint, tranquil, quiet and provide all the amenities you could possibly need. For nature lovers the variety of plants, vegetation, landscape, and beauty will astound you. Options for enjoying the outdoors include the outdoor pool, generous views from the balcony on which you have the luxury of enjoying the daily planned meals. Music plays quietly from the lounge area and there is also a piano on hand and if you’re fortunate enough you’ll be entertained by Jill’s joyful voice as she accompanies any of her talented quests that know how to strike the keys.
For those concerned about being out of sync with the outside or cyber space world there is computer access with wifi access available at certain times of day. The amenities are provided, however, it serves as a gentle reminder the resort is designed with your wellness in mind. Spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally. So in honor of yourself and with respect for the mandate of Ama Tierra and the other guests seeking seclusion it’s requested that the hours of the wifi access be maintained to help maintain the experience for both yourself and the other fortunate quests of this truly beautiful resort.
If you’re looking for an experience of truly harmonious, stress free, regeneration of spirit, mind and body where you’ll be treated with love and kindness then AmaTierra is definitely the place for you to go.
torontoyogini, Toronto, Review from TripAdvisor. January 2010 , SOLO TRAVEL
I landed at Amatierra having waited too long to take a vacation. I stayed two weeks and returned home rested and invigorated. My casita was clean, comfortable and spacious. Meals were delicious - abundant fresh exotic fruits, a variety of greens and herbs and local to Thai to Morrocan influenced dinners. Clean, mountain water. As a solo traveller, I felt safe and cared for with adventure at every turn - volcanoes, zip lines, nature hikes, horseback riding to a swimming hole replete with tarzan swing, the beach, the rodeo and merengue in San Pablo. Daily yoga in the outdoor studio was paradise - green parrots and toucans abound. All this in the warm company of Jill and Bob, the Amatierra staff and drivers. A relaxing and eclectic vacation.
ergohand, HMB, Review from TripAdvisor. January 2010 , Friends getaway
If you want to see an authentic part of Costa Rica and enjoy the natural sounds of the jungle, and have a healthy whole body experience, consider a stay at Amatierra. Safe, relaxing and boasting an open air yoga studio with a stunning view over a lush green forested valley, a traveler can unwind and let the sounds of the forest wash over him/her. Brilliant bird watching can be had from the comfortable veranda or from anywhere on the grounds. The food was outstanding: Nearly vegetarian, but always fresh, innovative, with fresh organic local ingredients and occasional fish and chicken expertly prepared. You can choose a travel package, or arrive like we did unplanned and find a new adventure every day. We enjoyed the coffee plantation, Montezumo, horseback riding in wild green country, ziplining in Turi Bari park and hidden waterfall hikes.
Tips: Remember to tip people in this side of the country. Tips are apparently discouraged in the larger cities but folks can use and appreciate the $$ here.
Even though it is cooler in the mountains, bring your natural bug stuff. There are things that nip other than mosquitoes.
Learn some spanish and don't be afraid to use it. Bring a phrase book. There are lots of folks on this side who don't speak much English but they are appreciative of your attempts.
The food and water are safe, we had NO tummy trouble in this part of the country.

Ama Tierra is an oasis of joy and peace away from life's overwhelm. Outstanding staff, service, caring, meals, and view are the norm here.
Bob and Jill are beautiful people who have created this experiential place -- not 'just' a hotel, but a place to stay and experience peace and joy.
Thank you!

Costa Rica is truly the land of OZ. A place where 5 % of the world's bio-diversity is found. Ama tierra was the vessel which housed our group for one week.
The staff and owners were exceptionally kind and helpful.
The food was tasty and healthy, the rooms pleasant, and the mountain setting was magical. If you are looking for a five star hotel with all the amenities of such, don't go there.
But if you are looking for a transformational place to explore Costa Rica, this is the place to stay.
abibergal, New York, Review from TripAdvisor. December 2009
If you wanted to make relaxation a place then Ama Tierra is that place. The food is not only tasty but healthy as well. The staff is friendly and the service is stellar.
After a few short hours you will truly feel at home. This is an excellent place to get away from the stresses of life and become one with all that is around you.
If you are looking to stay fit there are daily yoga classes with breath taking views. Wonderful and truly enjoyable expierence

Amatierra is a place that everyone should go to and experience at least once in their lifetime. The place is situated in the Costa Rican Mountainside about 1 hr from the main airport.
From the moment you get to their facilities you feel as if you are somewhere pristine and surreal. The owners and staff are very accomodating and try to make the trip as enjoyable and amazing as it can possibly be.
As stated before you are in the mountains at a high elevation. The views and scenery are unlike anything you will ever get to see elsewhere.
If you are in tune or want to be in tune with mother nature this is the place for you.
Coming out of an experience like the one we had you will be a totally renewed person.
Jona, Dallas, Texas
I feel a renewed spirit and balance as a result of the complete experience that included all the treatments, music, yoga and wonderful people at AmaTierra.
guest from Puerto Rico, september 2009
I thoroughly enjoyed my mountain retreat at the AmaTierra Hotel in September. I took the 5- day package which included yoga every day, one massage, and a trip to the Turu Ba Ri Park and wonderful meals on the balcony overlooking the valley. The rooms are nestled in the side of the mountain. Even though it was the rainy season, the sun shone everyday with short showers in the afternoon and the weather was comfortable enough to swin in the pool everyday.
The new octagonal yoga building is stunning – I went there just to sit and gaze and listen to the birds. I also had a blast on the zip line sailing over the trees at Turu Ba Ri Park. The entire AmaTierra staff was outstanding.
I especially appreciate that, when I was leaving, Roberto for setting up a tour of Carara National Park with Vic-Tours and suggested a hotel that was close to the park. I ended up going with Victor to his home town, Biagual, an enchanted town high on the top of a mountain.
AmaTierra, gracias por todo!
american couple living in costa rica, august 2009
"A last minute decision for my husband and I and a fortunate one....we
had just discovered Ama Tierra and were fortunate that a large group
had just left and thankfully the folks at Ama Tierra had some space
available. I was looking for Paradise and I found it, the area is
located in the Pacific rain forest area of Costa Rica and amazingly
beautiful and pristine.
The food prepared by Jill ( the owner) and her staff is fresh, delicious and healthy. The ambience created by Jill and her husband Bob is warm, friendly and fun. Every guest has their own "casita" consisting of a living area with a refrigerator, a large screen TV for watching videos, plus yummy snacks and coffee, a separate bedroom with extremely comfortable beds and a full bath.
My first order of business was swimming in the beautiful and welcoming
pool and then reading a book with my husband on our own patio as we
listened to the sounds of birds and other animal life found in
abundance on the property...AND smelling the wonderful food being
prepared for dinner.
Our fellow guests were delightful people, we were a small group and
the first evening we had an impromptu sing-a-long with Jill as she
played wonderful songs on her guitar and piano....a thoroughly
delightful evening.
While there I enjoyed a wonderful massage while my husband joined Bob at the main house and engaged in spirited conversation while listening to Bob's extensive collection of jazz recordings.
We were there mainly to unwind, however we plan on returning with our
older children and engage in the wide variety of excursions available
to the guests at the resort which include visits to beaches on the
Pacific coast... a visit to a natural bio-reserve nearby filled with
many activities such as zip-lining through the rain forest canopy and
horseback riding. There many activities to engage in which will make
the visit enjoyable for everyone in the family....not to mention the
Yoga sessions each morning with Jill. A great way to start the day!
We will be back..!! "
couple from california, august 2009
"My wife and I stayed at Ama Tierra to celebrate our tenth anniversary.
We were looking for a place of peace, beauty, and comfort for our two
week vacation. We found all of that and more, and made lifelong
friends, at Ama Tierra.
Ama Tierra provides all the intimacy and friendship of a bed and
breakfast with the privacy of a larger hotel. Add to that exquisite
personal service, amazing food, exciting eco-tours, daily yoga,
massage, and Jill's rejuvenating healing treatments, all set in the
beautiful Costa Rican rain forest and you have a glimpse of the oasis
that is Ama Tierra.
Since we had two weeks, we were able to take advantage of everything
Ama Tierra has to offer. We had plenty of time to go out to the beach,
the ziplines of Tu Ru Bari, Poas Volcano, and Carrara National Park.
We also had many days where we happily relaxed around the pool or on
the porch of our casita all day, watching the butterflies, toucans,
and lizards. It was the perfect combination of action and relaxation.
Bob and Jill treat guests like family, and they work as a great team.
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Every day spent at Ama Tierra
is a day well spent. "
COUPLE FROM PHILADELPHIA, AUGUST 2009
"My wife and I went to Ama Tierra at the end of April 2009 (just at the
end of the dry season), and we had a wonderful stay at Ama Tierra. We
decided to do the 7 day relaxation package, which we found to be a
good mix of activity and relaxation. We started off each morning with
Jill's hatha yoga class (which was a great way to start the day). It
was our first experience doing yoga in an open air setting, and the
studio is magnificent...even when we weren't practicing yoga, we found
ourselves heading back to the studio area to look over the valley,
relax, read books, etc. Jill is a great healer...during our stay, she
gave us full body massages (the best we have ever experienced) and
chakra rebalancing treatment (which was a very enlightening
experience). Another great aspect of Ama Tierra is the quality of the
food; we enjoyed each meal we had (what is most noteworthy is the
quality and freshness of the ingredients used to prepare the meals).
Having a glass of one of Bob's organic wines was a great way to add
some additional enjoyment to the evenings...Bob also has an excellent
music collection (particularly jazz), which made for a great ambience
for dinner on the open air terrace. I would certainly recommend AmaTierra to anyone looking for a relaxing & healthy getaway. You will
return feeling rejuvenated. Since we enjoyed are stay so much, my wife
and I have been recommending Ama Tierra to some of our yoga teachers
and students at our gym here in Philadelphia...so perhaps we will
return for a retreat in the near future!"
AmaTierra Honeymooners, July 2009
"We went in the "wet season" but it only rained one of the days at AmaTierra, and when it did rain it was just beautiful and only later in the day! We were the only guests there for two of the nights. It was absolutely wonderfully relaxing and the food was MARVELOUS. We loved the yoga studio! I even got a chance to teach some yoga myself which was a dream come true. We definitely recommend the honeymoon package- 3 nights in three different hotels. A complete Costa Rica experience not to be missed. Thank you Bob, Jill, Tara, Roberto, and the rest of the staff at AmaTierra. "
Sacred Sites Journeys Guide, Arizona, July 2009
"In May of 2009 I brought a tour group of women for a retreat. We spent a week being pampered by Jill and Bob and their incredibly friendly and professional staff, especially Roberto! Jill's morning Yoga classes in the Yoga Studio were for all range of students; she was able to tune into each of us and give us what we needed. The Studio was an excellent venue for our daily classes and meditations. With Mother Nature holding us in Her arms, we were able to relax and let go into those places of deep peace. Each of our meals was a labor of love. They were all excellent, using local fresh produce and chicken or fish. And the vegetarian options were as pleasing too! Where is that AmaTierra cookbook? We all want a copy! The casitas were roomy, clean, and charming. We spent hours relaxing in them, as well as by the pool. Our two off-site visits to the beach and Turubari Eco Park were well-planned. We enjoyed both days immensely. We all enjoyed the wellness facilities and booked several different sessions each with Jill and her staff. Each of us was well taken care of, and came away in better health, in all parts of our Being. I'll be returning next year with another group of women. Can't wait!"
AmaTierra Guest, Ft Lauderdale, June 2009
"The purpose of my trip to CR was to check on a house where I am moving about an hour away from AmaTierra. Even though Bob was playing in a golf tournament the day we arrived, he met us at the rental car place and gave us great directions on how to get to AmaTierra.
We did the 3 day stay and ended up adding a 4th day. Bob arranged a wonderful 4 hour horseback riding experience to a waterfall and swimming hole which was absolutely first rate. The guides, Brigette, husband James, and two of her children, treated us to an amazing ride and a BBQ next to the waterfall. My friend had never been horseback riding before and the horses are so well trained that she was able to gallop and really enjoy herself.
Jill is so knowledgeable about many different methods to soothe your soul and set you on a journey to recovery. She even took the time to connect me up with someone she knows close to where I live. We took advantage of everything the hotel offered from the Chinese herbal medicine, yoga, massage, BioMat (I now have to buy one for myself), a singing bowl session in the open air yoga studio during the full moon (awesome) and other body treatments.
The food was excellent and the staff very friendly. Bob hooked us with an organic white wine from Chile that I am on the outlook for in the states. If you are looking for a place to restore and pamper yourself, AmaTierra is the place to go."
AmaTierra Guest, Tucson, June 2009
"I came to Costa Rica by myself looking to be nurtured and cared for and found it at AmaTierra! I've never traveled to a foreign country by myself, knowing no one at all, and found Bob and Jill to be particularly attentive to my needs. I spent 16 days at AmaTierra during the rainy season. I have to say that the rainy season proved to be an amazingly magical time. Every afternoon it would rain, usually no more than two hours, and always finish raining prior to dinner. Dinner as well as the other meals was served on the balcony with wonderful views. One cannot say enough good things about this special place."
AmaTierra Guest, Denver, June 2009
"I did a 3 day wellness trip with a friend. It was wonderful. Three days is a good amount of time to enjoy the amenities and lovely ambience at AmaTierra. The owners are very attentive and desire to create your ideal stay."

"AmaTierra is beautiful. Casitas are nice. Bob & Jill are great. Food EXCELLENT. I needed quiet retreat time and AmaTierra certainly delivered."
AmaTierra Guest, Milwaukee, May 2009
"We just got back from our Costa Rica vacation. My husband and I had some of our best moments at AmaTierra. Bob and Jill are great hosts. The Yoga Center was absolutely magical and peaceful. A beautiful, sustainable hotel. Jill's therapeutic massage, Reiki and herbal techniques are high end. The food was the best I had in Costa Rica, morning, noon and night. We dined at several 4 & 5 star resorts in Costa Rica and I can honestly say, my best meals were at AmaTierra. The nights were great. If you are a music fan, the greatest music was always playing and Bob is a wealth of information and has great stories about the music industry. Jill has a beautiful voice too. Having dinner with our friends in the open air dining area (again great food) being serenaded by Jill, playing the piano, is a moment my husband and I won't forget. The service provided was great too. The staff was friendly, helpful, but not intrusive."
AmaTierra Guest, Colorado, May 2009
"When were planning our trip to Costa Rica we were looking for places and locations where we could feel at peace with ourselves but still feel pampered. Bob and Jill provided everything we desired surrounded by nature at its best. This is a place to relax your mind, body and spirit. Yoga at sunrise in a beautiful yoga center. Breakfast on the deck. Massages of all styles. And Dinner- They served not only healthy food but food that could be served at any fine 5 star restaurant."
AmaTierra Guest, New Hampshire, May 2009
"AmaTierra exceeded my expectations. Jill and Bob were warm and welcoming hosts. Jill is a very intuitive and spiritual practitioner. My experience was one of peace and self discovery. My casita was spacious and comfortable. The Yoga studio was amazing as it was open and the birds would sing and the breeze would blow at just the right times. I would highly recommend AmaTierra, especially if you are needing to renew and recharge your body, mind, and soul. The food and the services were outstanding. I will definitely go back there again sometime soon."
AmaTierra Guest, Costa Rica, April 2009
"AmaTierra is a located in a beautiful place, with an amazing scenery and surrounding nature. I really enjoy the relaxing and familiar ambient. Jill and Bob are really special people, who really care about their guests. All their team is very kind and each one of them is always willing to help. The days I spent in AmaTierra were special for me and my family. We all find it a peaceful and beautiful place with plenty of options and all the ingredients for leaving the stressful routine aside. Congratulations Jill and Bob for this place and thanks a lot for everything!"

"Very powerful, magical place. Jill and Bob are amazing people and have created a unique experience for their guests. They are surrounded by amazing scenery, beautiful hard working staff - which is a true reflection of themselves. We were so well looked after - whether arranging a guide/driver for an excursion or scheduling a treatment or having a yoga class in the grounding spiritual outdoor studio (so powerful), which inevitably led to amazing meals prepared by Marguerite and her girls. And of course down to the finest details - Organic Wine - how great is that! This is a place I would highly recommend to visit! I will be looking forward to my next visit!! To Bob and Jill and all the AmaTierra staff - Namaste!!."

"I believe life is about making new memories. My husband and I just achieved that by spending a wonderful week at AmaTierra for my 40th birthday. We were looking for somewhere to relax, rejuvenate, eat great food, experience an interesting country and begin my 40's in a memorable way. Jill and Bob are wonderful hosts, and made us feel very welcome. If you love yoga, massage and relaxation and are looking for an intimate time in beautiful Costa Rica I would like to highly recommend AmaTierra. Turabari Nature and Adventure Park is a short distance away. The well organized Wild Forest Trail takes you on an interesting journey to see native plants, flowers, many bird and butterfly species, crocodiles, iguanas, and the fabulous canopy zip-line was so much fun. We also went horse riding to a beautiful waterfall where we paddled in the crystal clear water, and viewed the scarlet macaws from Jaco and Hermosa beaches just one hour away. So if your 40th is coming up I would urge you to consider a week at AmaTierra to begin the next chapter of your life."

"Once a year my sister and I get together for a long weekend to spend some quality time together. She picked Costa Rica and I picked the place. AmaTierra couldn't have been more perfect. The setting is gorgeous and the casitas are comfortable and large enough for us both to have our own space. Doing yoga every morning in the stunning open air pavilion was the perfect way to start the day. The classes are wonderful and the views breathtaking. Even for those who don't really even do yoga, it is inviting and appropriate for all. The food was spectacular, fresh, local, organic when possible and just plain incredibly delicious. I wanted all their recipes. Side trips were great, our favorite was the serious adventure day to Bijagual falls, a gorgeous horseback ride followed by a swim in the natural pools. But what makes AmaTierra so special is simply the hosts Jill and Bob. Words can't express the beauty of these two people and what they bring to AmaTierra. They are wonderful people who make every effort to make your trip as memorable and enjoyable as possible. I can't wait to go back and until then will recommend it to all my friends."
AmaTierra Guest, Tuscon, AZ, January 2009
"From the initial reassuring emails..."where do we stay the first night!" to our final "good bye" dinner amongst other guests on the balcony overlooking a beautiful, green valley....our experience with AmaTierra was a delight. Our host and hostess were always nearby, offering suggestions for day trips, arranging for transport, making sure we were happy. Casitas were private and clean, simply appointed but not sparse. We watched movies in our room....a funny indulgence in the rain forest! We read, lounged by the pool, rode horses to a waterfall, did yoga in THE most amazing yoga studio in the world, ate beautiful and romantic candlelit dinners, and slept full long nights. AmaTierra is quiet... no disco or bar. Bob and Jill provided great wines and music, and the conversation was stimulating, funny and happy."
AmaTierra Guest, Montreal, January 14 2009
"Yoga overlooking the mountains, massages with Jill, delicious dinners on the balcony with Bob's music playing in background, side trips to beach at Esterillos, to Turabari Park, horseback riding to a waterfall-- all in all, a sublime experience. Jill and Bob are delightful hosts who aim to please."
AmaTierra Guest, San Francisco, CA, December 2008
"This hotel is almost indescribable and I have a hard time referring to it as a hotel since it is so much more. From the attention to setting up your perfect vacation, to the most amazingly prepared food, to the surroundings, private garden, and extraordinary, wellness/yoga center this is a place with no others in its caliber. As a student of Yoga I was mesmerized by the studio, as a single girl on vacation I was amazed at the activities, as a business woman I was surprised by the ease of which the surroundings cleared my mind, and as someone trying to get away for a short amount of time I could not have asked for a better place or better people to spend my time with. There is no one I know that would not love to experience all this great “hotel” has to offer."
AmaTierra Guest, Webster, NY, November 2008
"My recent stay at AmaTierra far surpassed my expectations. This wonderful hotel is nestled in the side of a mountain in the beautiful Costa Rican rainforest. It's surrounded by nature's beauty and it was one of the most peaceful and healthful vacations I have been on. The hotel rooms (casitas) are simple yet unique, the staff is friendly and efficient, the food is absolutely delicious and the views are breathtaking. The daily yoga classes are the perfect start to your day, along with the pampering massages and body treatments that are also available to you. If you're looking to de-stress and reconnect with yourself and nature, Hotel AmaTierra is the place to visit."

"The stay at AmaTierra was amazing... The trip was a birthday gift from my sister and the owners Bob and Jill made it the most personable, memorable experience I probably will ever have. Skeptical about trying yoga.... Jill made me feel that I could actually do it!!! If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing, rejuvenating vacation, this is the place to go. My favorite part besides the personal attention from the owners and staff was the food. I would definitely return to this beautiful place. Turning 40 years old never felt so good!!! "

"My experience of Pura Vida at AmaTierra was refreshing. From the healthy organic Costa Rican culinary delight to morning yoga and meditation, peaceful and natural. Bob and Jill and their friendly staff courted us through our days with Jungle Tours, Eco-adventures and tasteful moments of music and dining. We relaxed with massage and danced our passions at the AmaTierra. Laughter and the great spirit energy encompassed us to our soul's delight . Nature and beauty surrounded us each day as the dry season blew in and blew all the dampness out of our hair."

"The hotel is nestled in the mountains, maybe an hour from the Capital. The hotel made arrangements for our group to be picked up at the airport, and the driver was so pleasant. We had breakfast on the terrace over-looking the mountains and each evening chit chatted over endless glasses of Argentinean wines. The hotel plan included breakfast and dinner and it was always good and generous.
The owners and the staff were friendly and had suggestions on where to go and even obtained discounts for us at the eco-forest tours. The rooms were nice and cozy casitas with mango trees outside of our rooms, which by the way we had at breakfast each morning. While the pool was not very large, it was pleasant, located below the terrace near the reception. I was there with a 6 other people but it would also be a wonderful romantic get away."

"AmaTierra is nestled among the mountains and forests of Costa Rica. I was traveling with a friend of mine and each morning we awoke to the sound of birds followed by our morning yoga session in the open air yoga studio nestled in the side of a mountain. No matter which way you looked you saw gorgeous green rolling hills and beautiful wild life. The yoga studio is the most amazing place in the world to do yoga! I had only done yoga 2 times before going there, but Jill was wonderful at mixing the instruction to accommodate for me and those more skilled at yoga.
The personal attention from the staff was unparallel! All the food was freshly made and the meals were outstanding! I found that I cleared my plate at every meal because everything was wonderful! My friend came down with a minor sickness while we were there and thank goodness they have an herbalist on staff because she was back to normal within hours! The treatments that were offered were also very relaxing and re-energizing. Nothing beats getting a massage while staring out at the rain forests! I cannot say enough good things about AmaTierra but I know that I will be recommending this place to everyone I know and hope to return soon!AmaTierra has done quite a bit for the community and is working to improve education, eco-friendliness and the overall quality of life for their community! Also - if you get the opportunity I highly recommend the trip to Carrera with Vic Chaves. Vic is a delightful person with a tremendous knowledge of the land. He took us hiking and we saw Howler Monkeys, White Faced Monkeys, scarlet macaws and poison dart frogs! We also were led on a medicine walk with Alida Francisco which was quite fascinating. For anyone that wants to tap into their connectedness with the earth I highly recommend this experience!
AmaTierra Honeymooners, July 2008
"In looking for a honeymoon that provided both adventure and relaxation, my husband and I were very pleased with our trip to Costa Rica and our stay at AmaTierra. The Triple H Honeymoon package provided by AmaTierra was completely planned for us and allowed us to tour the beautiful country with ease. Our final destination was AmaTierra and it was the perfect ending to a memory-making honeymoon. Yoga each morning was peaceful and energizing. The family-style meals were a great change from the norm and the food was fresh and delicious. Our "casita" was comfortable and incredibly clean. Jill, Bob, and Julia were excellent hosts and provided great conversation. In short, a wonderful honeymoon that had the perfect blend of adventure, exploration, and quiet relaxation. Thank you! Oh, and thank you again for mailing my bathing suit back to the states!! "

"AmaTierra and its hosts Bob and Jill offer a truly magical experience. In the seven days that I stayed there, I learned how to eat healthier, relax, meditate, understand my body through daily yoga, see some amazing scenery and make some really nice acquaintances. Each day offered a new adventure, some serene and others exciting. Everything you could ask for was attended to from delicious meals to recreational outings to surrounding parks and beaches, to singing around a piano with newly acquired friends. The owners and the staff will take time and care in making sure that your needs are attended to--as little or as much as you ask. I would recommend this to anyone caught in the daily grind, wanting a healthy and relaxing escape or an intimate getaway for two. You will not regret it!"

"AmaTierra is a fabulous wellness and yoga retreat! The tranquility of the Costa Rican mountains along with the earthy scents of the rainforest is as close to peaceful existence as one can experience. The personalized herbal and nutritional consultation with yoga, wellness and health is available for you to enjoy and integrate. Meals are home cooked, fresh and natural and did I say a pleasure for your palate? Jill and Bob Ruttenberg are the owners and hosts who do everything to make your stay a marvelous experience."

"I recently returned from a week at AmaTierra--and I am still glowing! The hotel/resort is well situated, with lots of easy and interesting excursions nearby. But AmaTierra itself is so pleasant and peaceful, staying put and exploring the grounds or reading (snoozing?) in a hammock is hard to beat. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The casitas are colorful and comfortable. The food is simple but fresh, good, and plentiful. And "sun salutation" takes on a whole new meaning with the sun rising in the blue sky above, birds singing in the trees, and mangos thudding to the ground all around you! The new yoga/wellness center is a knockout--it should be a great addition. It's also a plus that as a single middle-aged woman who visited Costa Rica for the very first time on my own, I felt not only welcomed but also perfectly comfortable and safe. I met some great people from all over the world. My stay at AmaTierra--and my time in Costa Rica--was truly memorable. I am so eager to return! "

"A stay at AmaTierra will nourish your mind, body and soul. The casitas are pretty, quiet, private and comfortable, food was scrumptious and plentiful. Yoga out on the deck of the pool was very soothing. During my stay I met a couple of terrific women traveling together and others on their own too. You really slow down in this low key and gracious environment, and yet service is prompt and professional. Jill, Bob and Dan will make all sorts of arrangements for you to enjoy the surrounding areas. It’s just over an hour from the San Jose airport, and close enough to the sights and beaches if you want to take a day trip. It’s affordable and a good value."

"Imagine doing yoga on a beautiful clear morning, surrounded by mango trees as toucans and other colorful birds fly by. Our stay in Costa Rica was amazing and AmaTierra contributed much to the magic. Situated in a less touristy area of Costa Rica, the views of the mountains are magnificent, there are trails to walk on to view wildlife, the rooms are simple but very comfortable and private. The food is delicious and plentiful. It's a great place to base out of to take day trips or to simply relax and be in nature.
All of this is terrific in and of itself, but the thing that makes Ama Tierra unique are the owners and staff. Staying at Ama Tierra is like visiting friends. Jill and Bob are warm and caring, wonderful people. They, and Dan, take the time to talk with you, to help you plan how you want to spend your time. Jill is a gifted healer and teacher and musician. Bob is such a gracious host, there to greet you when you return from an adventure or to offer a glass of wine before dinner or just to talk. It only took us one day to begin calling Ama Tierra "home". Everyone who works at Ama Tierra is friendly. The guides who work for them are knowledgeable, interesting people. Everyone is fun!If you like you can eat dinner apart, but most guests like to dine together at a big table on the balcony. Conversation is lively. It's food for body, heart and soul. I can't say enough about what a fantastic place this is! This is the only place I've ever stayed where, upon leaving, I was hugged by the owners, staff and guests. "

"My girlfriend and I booked a room for a night and got there just in time for a brief evening yoga class in the not-yet-done yoga studio. The class was great and the sunset view of the mountain view was absolutely spectacular; when that studio is done it will probably have one of the best locations in the country. Jill and Bob were great, genuine, and down to earth hosts that made the experience so much more enjoyable. We did not have the appetite for the dinner, but we were able to indulge in a delicious bottle of South African Shiraz on the porch. The wine selection was great. We found out that Bob specially orders only good wines that customers will enjoy, which was quite a treat in that area of Costa Rica. The walk down to the stream and around the property was a bit disappointing, a little too short for what we were expecting, but it did bring us to the beautiful pool earlier for a morning swim. The rooms were a perfect size with great mirrors, according to my girlfriend, and a very comfortable bed. If you enjoy a movie before bed, Jill and Bob have an expansive selection to choose from and each room comes equipped with a DVD player. Great experience and we would definitely visit again."

"AmaTierra Hotel was just what I needed to relax and renew for the new year. The food is terrific, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and you have the choice of doing everything or nothing at all. I felt very well taken care of and I also felt that the owners, Jill and Bob, really cared about the quality of my experience. I would recommend AmaTierra to anyone looking to get away from it all and have a genuine Costa Rican experience - I can't wait to go back!."

"I can't say enough positive things about our experience at AmaTierra. I have traveled extensively, and have never felt more welcome at a hotel than I did at AmaTierra. I felt more like I was visiting friends than a hotel guest. Bob, Jill and Dan are fabulous and entertaining. I liked that the yoga was early in the morning, it was a great way to start the day.
The new yoga studio is going to be amazing. The food was unbelievable, and you definitely won't go hungry! I also found the yoga a nice mix of poses that all levels of practice would find beneficial. It's definitely a place I would like to return to.""AmaTierra Hotel was just what I needed to relax and renew for the new year. The food is terrific, the staff is friendly and knowledgeato go back!."

"I spent 5 days at AmaTierra and had a lovely experience. My friend and I did the 3 day Wellness package and then filled an additional 2 days with excursions. We were more than pleased with AmaTierra - a peaceful property offering a healthy and nurturing experience. This is the place to come to if you're looking to practice yoga and meditation in a breathtaking setting (we were lucky to take advantage of the new yoga studio even in its unfinished state), and branch out to local attractions during the day. AmaTierra was tremendously helpful in arranging all aspects of our trip and activities. The food was above average and rooms were large, comfortable and in-keeping with the property's simple and calm atmosphere. We felt welcomed and enjoyed getting to know staff and fellow guests.
I would not recommend AmaTierra to those seeking nightlife, as its location is somewhat remote. But for those looking for somewhere to combine enjoying Costa Rica with bringing oneself to a place of "zen", I can't think of a more inspiring hotel."

For the last 6 years 16 "girls” have been taking one week off from our busy schedules, from our husbands, kids, work and cold winters in Chicago. This year our "friend, leader, travel agent and translator”
Maria recommended Costa Rica and it was a great choice.
The weather was perfect, Jill, Bob and Dan were very friendly and welcoming. Food was excellent and so was the wine. Yoga was great and the view from dining room breath taking. The selection of music was very good. Day trip to Turuburi Park -what an experience-loved it.
The best time our group had by the pool at the AmaTierra where we were relaxing, reading, talking and listening to the soothing music. Jill and Bob had a very challenging week by hosting such a big group, but they did amazing job. Thank You !!!!!!!”

"I have just returned from an incredible week at the health and wellness hotel, AmaTierra, in the mountains of beautiful Costa Rica. The rest, yoga, massage and tranquility that I was seeking were all here along with healthy, delicious meals beautifully presented.
The owners, Bob and Jill, were charming and caring, catering to all my expectations. The week was filled with daily yoga, massages of various kinds, sound therapy and meditation, and nutritional counseling, as I requested. Hikes along rivers with incredible waterfalls and swimming pools rounded out my week's retreat. Additional tours were available for park and beach recreation, local functions in surrounding villages, volcanoes and other native sights.
The accommodations were wonderful. Nicely decorated, private deck with views of the mountains, tub, refrigerator and tv with dvd, and phone. I can't say enough about Jill, whose energy and knowledge and talents truly awed me. I left with regrets but went home with a renewed awareness and rejuvenated spirit.! "

"It is easy to enjoy AmaTierra for the beauty and simple elegance of the place.... as well as the warm and friendly ambiance. You will find that is more than enough!
However, if you are at all inclined, allow Jill to bestow her gracious, healing energy on you and you will be amazed! Not only is this place magic, but so are the people who own and manage it. I loved my time at AmaTierra and hope to return, soon!"

"My family stayed in several properties during our first introduction to Costa Rica and our final days at AmaTierra were the perfect finale to our trip. The cabin suites with comfortable furnishing and amenities are nestled in the mountainside among lush verdant foliage and lend themselves to great privacy.
The pool and the dining area are strategically elevated so that you have sweeping views of the countryside. Meals were fabulous! The congenial hosts make your stay one that you will regret must come to an end. My wife and daughters particularly enjoyed the outdoor early morning and evening yoga sessions. Great place to stay as a hub for many day activities.Would I recommend this hotel to my best friend? Absolutely!

"I was amazed. Before arriving at AmaTierra, I was traveling by car with someone determined to have a bad time. When We arrived we were greeted in such a wonderful way. They were less concerned about the check in and wanted to get us something to drink after our long drive, sit us down and have a chat. It was more like old friends wanting to catch up.
The hotel was beautiful beyond what is captured on their website. The view is spectacular and more important, the Atmosphere was astounding. We quickly got to know other travelers and shared our experiences in the main guest area. The meals were the best we had during our entire stay in Costa Rica.
And they quickly won over my pessimistic travel companion.
I have never experienced anything quite like it in my travels. Good company and good times await all who choose to visit this precious gem in the sky. "A TripAdvisor Member, Hoofddorp TripAdvisor, September 2007
"This is a nice, cozy place with enough personal space for privacy (comfortable, spacious apartment) with a tremendous view of the valley. It's ideal to relax there for it is located outside any town or build-up yet is not too far from the city (San José) or the coastline (Pacific). We went there just for one night while traveling from one place to the next and found out about it through the FlexiVoucher system.
We especially liked the hospitality with which we were treated by the owner. It really gave us the feeling we were right at home right from the start at checking in, until driving through the gate while leaving. It was the true interest they have in us as guests that made us feel that way.
We had dinner together with the owner and administrator after a long, tiresome drive that day. Instead of crashing to sleep immediately, we stayed up and gave their house wine a try (deliciously sweet) and ended up in a nice conversation with them. It even delayed our leaving the next day for we were having a real good time just talking and discussing about anything we liked. "A TripAdvisor Member, New Jersey TripAdvisor, September 2007
"My husband and I stayed at AmaTierra as the third of four stops in the Heart of Costa Rica package. Everything about AmaTierra was relaxing! The rooms were private, comfortable, and nicely decorated (especially the bathroom). We slept so peacefully!
The food was also fantastic. We enjoyed having dinner with Jill, Bob, and their family and friends. The personal touches really enhanced our Costa Rican experience. Next time we travel to Costa Rica, we will definitely stop at AmaTierra for a little TLC (and hopefully some massage therapy). [As a little hint, the bottles of wine were very reasonably priced at AmaTierra. We found wine to be very overpriced and hard to find at the other hotels we visited. We suggest bringing a little extra AmaTierra to your next location.]"A TripAdvisor Member, San Francisco, CA TripAdvisor, September 2007

"The views from the hillside setting are spectacular. But Jill and Bob Ruttenberg make staying at AmaTierra a carefree, luxurious delight. "Friendly, caring hosts Jill and Bob made us feel right at home during our week's stay. Plenty of privacy in our modern hillside casita meshed well with shared meals on the balcony overlooking the hills for both breakfast and dinner. Nice way to get to know the other guests. The food was unsurpassable! Restful setting, and plenty of places to walk and hike when you aren't taking advantage of the massages, horseback riding, dips in the pool or yoga classes. Photographer's heaven. Excellent location for taking day trips, especially to Turubarii Park. Can't wait to go back!"

"My wife and I stayed four nights at AmaTierra. We loved it! I booked our stay in October and had an email correspondence with Bob and Jill, so we felt like we already knew each other when arrived. Bob and Jill are fantastic hosts. They find out your interests, make suggestions and open your eyes to possibilities you may never have known existed.
Jill is a fabulous massage therapist, yoga instructor and herbalist. We started each day with a morning poolside, gentle yoga session. Afterwards, we would have a wonderful breakfast on the patio (fresh fruit, eggs cooked to order, etc.) overlooking the mountains with great music softly playing in the background. My wife and I were amazed by the sound therapy session each of us had with Jill, as well as our massage sessions. Very restorative, healing and eye opening as to alternatives to conventional western medicine. Bob has an encyclopedic knowledge of music--he even attended Woodstock! He is great fun to talk to about a multitude of subjects and I guarantee that he will turn you on to some new music that you will want to have at home.Dinners are simply the best. We were blown away by Jill's ceviche (we had it at several other places in CR but none could compare with Jill's) and yellow fin tuna that had been caught the morning it was served. The Saturday evening we were there Bob and Jill had some local friends over for dinner and we had so much fun meeting a tico/tica couple, who even gave us salsa/merengue lessons! A very special treat.
AmaTierra is the perfect place to begin or end your Costa Rican adventures, or as a destination for one of their seminars. We came as guests and left as friends. After four days we felt as though we had achieved the three "r's", rested, restored and rejuvenated. We hated to leave but promised ourselves (and Jill and Bob) that we would return, and we hope to be able to do so soon."A TripAdvisor Member. TripAdvisor, January 2007
